Boiler Repair Cost: Common Faults and Emergency Prices

Updated

A boiler repair is priced by the fault, the part and whether the engineer comes out in an emergency. Here are the UK prices for standard and emergency repairs, what common faults such as a failed gas valve cost, a gas engineer's hourly rate, what to check before you pay, and how two repairs in a year compare with a new combi boiler.

Boiler repair costs in the UK

A boiler repair costs £120 to £750, with an average of £300, in Checkatrade’s boiler repair cost guide, last updated in May 2026. Its prices for a repair, an emergency repair and a gas engineer’s time are UK prices excluding VAT.

Repair or rate UK price, excluding VAT Average
Boiler repair £120 to £750 £300
Emergency boiler repair £225 to £675 £450
Gas engineer, per hour, plus parts £50 to £80 £65

Common boiler faults and what they cost

Most common boiler faults cost £100 to £500 to repair on Checkatrade’s figures, and each repair priced below falls within that range.

Repair Price
Replace a gas valve, labour and materials £180 to £220
Replace a straightforward horizontal flue Around £200
Repair a kettling boiler Around £300

The gas valve price covers labour and materials in one figure. Ask an engineer for a repair price the same way, as one total with the parts and VAT in it, and two quotes for the same job can be compared like for like.

Emergency boiler repair and breakdown costs

An emergency boiler repair costs £225 to £675, excluding VAT, in Checkatrade’s boiler repair prices, and its £450 average is £150 more than the £300 average for a standard repair.

For a breakdown, Checkatrade’s example emergency job prices are £275 where a simple part such as a new electrode fixes the boiler, and £182 for loss of boiler pressure, where the job is repressurising with a filling loop. Repressurising is a top-up, and a boiler that keeps losing pressure after one needs a heating engineer to find the cause.

Among the Nottingham heating engineers compared for boiler breakdowns, Warm For Life in Beeston offers 24/7 emergency boiler repairs.

Boiler warranty and insurance cover

Checkatrade’s boiler repair guide says to check whether the boiler is still under warranty or covered by insurance before you pay for a repair. Its boiler service guide adds that annual servicing may be required to keep the manufacturer’s warranty valid.

Do not skip the annual service on a boiler under warranty

If the warranty needs a yearly service and the boiler misses one, the warranty may no longer be valid, and the next repair, £120 to £750 before VAT, is yours to pay.

The same service guide says a one-off service is usually cheaper upfront, while boiler cover spreads the cost and may include repairs. The cover prices below, from that guide and the boiler repair guide, exclude VAT.

Cover Low to high, excluding VAT Average
Boiler insurance £8 to £30 a month £15 a month
Monthly boiler cover £8 to £13 a month £10.50 a month
Boiler and central heating cover £180 to £300 a year £240 a year

At the £15 average on Checkatrade’s boiler repair figures, a year of boiler insurance costs £180, and a single average repair costs £300.

Gas engineer hourly rate

A gas engineer charges £50 to £80 an hour plus parts, with an average of £65, excluding VAT, on Checkatrade’s figures for boiler work, so 2 hours at the average rate comes to £130 before a part is fitted.

An hourly rate leaves the bill open until the work is done, while a fixed price settles it before the engineer starts. MCB Heating in St Ann’s is a Nottingham firm that gives fixed-price quotes.

A gas boiler repair is a job for a Gas Safe registered engineer. Under the rules HSE sets out for home owners, anyone employed to work on gas appliances in a home must be Gas Safe registered and competent in that area of gas work, and the areas an engineer is competent in are marked on the back of their Gas Safe Register ID card.

Before a gas engineer starts on your boiler

  • You have checked whether the warranty or your boiler cover pays for the repair
  • The engineer has shown you a Gas Safe Register ID card
  • The back of the card shows they are competent to work on gas boilers
  • The price, and whether it includes VAT, is agreed before the work starts

Repair or replace your boiler

A boiler typically lasts 10 to 15 years before it could start costing you money, and Checkatrade’s new boiler figures put a like-for-like combi replacement, a new combi in the same place as the old one, at £2,500 to £4,000 supplied and fitted.

A year with two average boiler repairs

First boiler repair, average£300
Second boiler repair, average£300

Total £600

The repair averages exclude VAT. Set against them, a like-for-like combi replacement starts at £2,500 supplied and fitted on Checkatrade's new boiler figures, which do not say whether VAT is included.

Which comes out cheaper depends on the boiler’s age, how often it breaks down, and whether a warranty or your cover pays for the repairs. The warranty on a replacement is part of that sum. T & S Heating in Arnold includes labour and unlimited 24/7 emergency call-outs in the 15-year warranty on boilers it installs, which also covers the boiler, radiators and pipework as long as the system is serviced. In Beeston, Warm For Life’s guarantee runs up to 12 years on selected Worcester Bosch boilers, and Fahrenheit Plumbing & Heating gives a manufacturer’s guarantee of up to 12 years.
