Common boiler faults and what they cost

Most common boiler faults cost £100 to £500 to repair on Checkatrade’s figures, and each repair priced below falls within that range.

The gas valve price covers labour and materials in one figure. Ask an engineer for a repair price the same way, as one total with the parts and VAT in it, and two quotes for the same job can be compared like for like.

Emergency boiler repair and breakdown costs

An emergency boiler repair costs £225 to £675, excluding VAT, in Checkatrade’s boiler repair prices, and its £450 average is £150 more than the £300 average for a standard repair.

For a breakdown, Checkatrade’s example emergency job prices are £275 where a simple part such as a new electrode fixes the boiler, and £182 for loss of boiler pressure, where the job is repressurising with a filling loop. Repressurising is a top-up, and a boiler that keeps losing pressure after one needs a heating engineer to find the cause.

Boiler warranty and insurance cover

Checkatrade’s boiler repair guide says to check whether the boiler is still under warranty or covered by insurance before you pay for a repair. Its boiler service guide adds that annual servicing may be required to keep the manufacturer’s warranty valid.

A gas engineer charges £50 to £80 an hour plus parts, with an average of £65, excluding VAT, on Checkatrade’s figures for boiler work, so 2 hours at the average rate comes to £130 before a part is fitted.

A gas boiler repair is a job for a Gas Safe registered engineer. Under the rules HSE sets out for home owners, anyone employed to work on gas appliances in a home must be Gas Safe registered and competent in that area of gas work, and the areas an engineer is competent in are marked on the back of their Gas Safe Register ID card.

Repair or replace your boiler
